Reorientating dental curricula to reflect a minimally invasive dentistry approach for patient‐centred management

Abstract: Minimally invasive dentistry (MID), together with patient-centred care (PCC), can be considered central to patient management. These approaches have been incorporated in the structure of various dental curricula and indeed formally assessed. However, there is limited evidence that students have an integrated skill-set and are able to apply these skills when providing direct patient care within the clinical setting. Assessment of students' application of core clinical skills has identified numerous deficiencies… Show more

“…Patient centred care (PCC) is now well established in health care practice, with increasing evidence of positive impact on medical and clinical outcomes . PCC has also affected dental training programmes, with aspects of minimum invasive/intervention dentistry within a PCC context implying that such programmes should include modules on interpersonal skills when discussing oral health management . Nevertheless, debate continues on the real meaning of PCC and how best to measure it.…”

“…The curriculum involves small and large group learning within a single multidisciplinary integrated stream. Case-based learning, encompassing a range of small group (5-7 students) CL contexts, organizes students' learning (Kaidonis et al, 2013). First-to fourth-year students analyze professional scenarios, involving research, integration, and application of concepts from other learning activities, over 2-to 4-week blocks.…”

“…Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, with its prevention, diagnosis and treatment comprising a major component of everyday clinical practice. Over the years, an enhanced understanding of caries aetiology and the application of minimal intervention principles has revolutionized caries management . The ability to accurately quantify caries is of great importance in diagnosing and monitoring lesions, while also assessing the effectiveness of prescribed intervention.…”
