RenovaBio-Towards a New National Biofuel Policy and a Truly Sustainable World

Abstract: For some decades, Brazil has opted for a strategy of producing fuels from biomass, the so-called biofuels. With creativity and a good dose of innovation, the country was able to turn crises caused by oil shocks into big opportunities for investing in sugarcane ethanol as a stable and safe source of energy for its vehicles fleet. The second step was the commitment to biofuels through the implementation of the National Program for the Production and Use of Biodiesel (PNPB). The Biodiesel Program, coupled with th… Show more

“…Brazil, the largest ethanol producer from sugarcane globally, has put in place a series of biofuels policies, such as the National Biofuels Policy (RenovaBio), the Agro-Ecological Zoning, and the current proposal for a credit subsidized COVID-19 Emergency Program to Support the Brazilian Sugar-Energy Sector (Peasse). These measures aim to meet the growing demand for ethanol and sugar while safeguarding the renewable energy targets of Nationally Determined Contributions, as well as generating new incentives for biofuel production and technological innovation under sustainability criteria 2 , 6 .…”

“…Therefore, future electrical power grids tend to be decentralized and to include a large number of small-and medium-sized distributed plants (Ramos et al, 2014). Overall, important systemic aspects, i.e., economic, social, and environmental ones, should be considered for biomass-to-energy projects (Novato and Lacerda, 2017).…”
