Partindo da teoria da atenção de Hugo Munsterberg e sobre o pensamento do plano-sequência de André Bazin, fazemos no presente estudo o questionamento sobre a forma de um cinema realista. Realista não simplesmente no sentido de apresentar detalhes da realidade, mas de ser capaz de inserir o espectador na obra. O espectador participando do espetáculo faria mais que assisti-lo, o experimentaria. Para isso é necessário um estudo das formas do cinema, levando em conta suas técnicas. No presente artigo será feito este exercício de pensamento do cinema, introduzindo-nos brevemente em sua história até o momento em que o plano-sequência passa a desempenhar papel importante dentro da cinematografia mundial.

“…' Jean Renoir, working in exile in Hollywood, made The Land is Mine (1943) as a film uniquely for Americans who 'allowed themselves to be influenced by a certain propaganda attempting to represent all of France as collaborationist'. He did the film 'to suggest to Americans that daily life in an occupied country was not as easy as some people may have thought' (Renoir, 2005(Renoir, [1954). Albert Lory (played by Charles Laughton), a coward-turned-resister teacher, says at his trial: 'It's very easy to talk about heroism in the free countries − but it's hard to talk about it here where our people are starving' (Renoir, 1970: 107).…”

An examination of American representations of the Resistance since World War II in American press and film reveals that they have evolved according to French−American relations and American attitudes towards France and the French people. Admired during the war for forms of civilian resistance absent in recent American history, resisters re-emerged for American New Left readers of existentialism as models of engagement. However, in the ensuing conservative, gallophobic period in the United States, the French Resistance lost this iconic status and is treated ironically or rendered absent.
