Renewable energy development in Malaysia: Communication barriers towards achieving the national renewable energy target

Abstract: In Malaysia, the utilization of renewable energy (RE) as in “five fuel diversification policy” has been intensified since 2000 in the 8th Malaysian plan (2001-2005) as an addition to the supply from conventional energy sources. However, the RE goal in the policy was achieved minimally and later continued in the 9th Malaysian plan (2006-2010). At the end of 2010, The RE goal was again achieved minimally. Previous studies have been carried out to understand the influence of technological, economic, social and po… Show more

“…On the other hand, some research articles have intensely reviewed the barriers to the renewable energy sector in achieving sustainable goals. Policy making, competence in research articles on various developed and developing countries and socioeconomic status, as well as analytical discussions on barriers have prevailed [35]. For example, the main objective of the research conducted by K. Murugaperumal [36] was to present a technically feasible and economically acceptable hybrid power generation system for off-grid electrification in a rural area of India, the fastest-developing nation.…”

“…But similar to Malaysia, there is a lack of effort and infrastructure present in the secondary level of education. This is because the policies currently implemented cater to the higher education spectrum and less policies are implemented in the secondary education [3], [4], [6]. Thus, this paper aims to highlight the importance of using M-learning to provide quality education for all including students in the remote areas of the country and in turn use M-learning to promote RE education amongst the secondary school students.…”

“…The government issued a new plan of achieving 40% of energy from RE sources by 2041 but doubts have already risen about this if drastic measures are not taken [4], [5]. In both the countries the common factor in not achieving their respected goals was the lack of awareness, availability of knowledge on RE concepts amongst the general public [4], [6]. Education plays a pivotal role in creating and promoting awareness about various concepts that in turn helps drive the society to achieve their goals.…”

“…The lack of awareness and early exposure to RE concepts at the secondary level of education directly influences the level of future competent technical professionals that a nation will produce, as well as how well a nation can develop and build sustainable energy infrastructure to harness their energy needs and achieve their RE targets. Another barrier that is closely linked to the social barrier is the technological one, which causes the shortage of new research and technological advancements and innovations in the RE sector [5,[15][16][17][18].…”
