Renewable energy and carbon reduction potentials of municipal solid waste in MALAYSIA

Abstract: Release of green house gases (GHGs) from landfills as a result of ineffective management of those landfills is a serious environmental problem especially in developing countries. The landfill gas (LFG) thus released is a potential resource that can be converted to renewable energy. LFG is made up majorly of methane and carbon dioxide and produced by anaerobic biodegradation processes of municipal solid waste in landfills. This study estimates the amount of this methane emitted from landfills and its potential … Show more

“…Seelong landfill is the first clean development mechanism (CDM) project in Malaysia and one of the 14 landfills in Johor state. It captures about 10,000 tons of LFG per year (25% of generated capacity) for flaring [7,8]. However, flaring is the least desirable way of LFG emission control -LFG utilization for renewable energy production is the state-of-the-art technology.…”

“…1) was taken to be 10,000 tons per year. This figure was based on the work of Reference [8] in which LFG estimation was made for Seelong landfill and all other landfill sites in Johor state. The product per ton input material and emission reduction potentials for various technologies are shown in Table 1.…”

“…After the gas is converted to electricity, a dedicated line is used to deliver the electricity to utilities. Interconnection usually includes metering equipment necessary to monitor sales and system protection equipment with emergency shutdown capability to prevent either party from damaging the other's equipment, or operations, or injuring personnel [20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…But vigorous efforts are continuing to be made even as the problem is actually increasing in magnitude and complexity rather than getting even partially solved [15,22,98,103,166,196]. The focus in recent years has been on generating energy from MSW, besides material recovery [16,20,63,113,200,204]. The hope that a 'clean and sustainable solution to the MSW problem (and the E-waste problem)' is around the corner continues to be expressed [116,175,186].…”
