ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of watermelon seedlings irrigated with saline waters and cultivated in different types of environments and substrates. The experimental design was completely randomized with split-split plots, in which the plot corresponded to two growing environments (EN1 = full sun and EN2 = 50% shade black net), the subplot to two types of irrigation water (IW1 = 0.8 and IW2 = 2.5 dS m-1) and the sub-subplot to four types of substrates (SB1 = vermiculite + coconut fiber, SB2 = manure + soil, SB3 = carbonized rice husk + soil, SB4 = biochar + soil), with four replicates of twenty-five seeds. The variables analyzed were: emergence percentage (EP), emergence speed index (ESI), mean time of emergence (MTE), number of leaves (NL), stem diameter (SD), seedling height (SH) and root length (RL), shoot dry mass (SDM), root dry mass (RDM) and total dry mass (TDM). The EN2 treatment provided better conditions for emergence and initial growth, and EN1 was also favorable to the emergence and initial growth of watermelon seedlings, when the substrates SB1 and SB2 were used.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la calidad post-cosecha de frutos de melón producido con diferentes niveles de salinidad del suelo y manejos de fertirrigación, en un invernadero en el Área experimental del Departamento de Ingeniería Rural de la Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, USP, localizado en el municipio de Piracicaba, Sao Paulo. Los tratamientos resultaron de la combinación de dos factores: 6 niveles de salinidad inicial del suelo (S1 = 1,0; S2 = 2,0; S3 = 3,0; S4 = 4,0; S5 = 5,0 y S6 = 6,0 dS m-1) y dos manejos de fertirrigación: el tradicional y con control de la conductividad eléctrica de la solución del suelo. El diseño estadístico adoptado fue de bloques al azar completos con 4 repeticiones, los factores fueron estudiados en un esquema factorial de 6 x 2. La salinización inicial del suelo fue realizada por medio de la aplicacón de soluciones salinas preparadas a partir de fertilizantes. La cantidad de sales adicionadas fue determinada mediante una curva de salinización artificial obtenida previamente en laboratorio. Los resultados revelaron que los niveles de sólidos solubles totales y el pH de los frutos de melón fueron significativamente reducidos con el incremento de los niveles de salinidad del suelo; entretanto, no se constató efecto significativo de los factores estudiados sobre la calidad física de los frutos.
