Renal vascularization indexes and fetal hemodynamics in fetuses with growth restriction

Abstract: Renal vascularization indexes were inversely correlated with ductus venosus pulsatility indexes and were diminished in fetuses showing hemodynamic compromise. These changes might be related to postnatal renal impairment. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Fetal biometry was obtained through measurements of biparietal diameter (DBP), cephalic (CC) and abdominal circumference (CA), and femur (F). 26 Fetal weight was estimated by the formula of Hadlock et al 27 Doppler velocimetry measurements were performed with a Doppler device with colored blood flow mapping using a lowfrequency filter (25 Hz or 50 Hz). The Doppler sample window was adjusted from 2 mm to 10 mm according to the vessel size, and the insonation angle of the vessel was always less than 60 .…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] Low-birth weight infants present up to 20% fewer glomeruli in the renal cortex compared to controls if evaluated after death due to non-renal diseases and therefore have a lower renal volume. [19][20][21] Several studies describe the association of decreased renal volume with lower renal function [22][23][24][25][26][27] and, since fetal renal flow might be altered in fetuses with FGR a reduction in fetal renal volume may be observed during pregnancy, that might be associated to the long-term renal consequences of this condition.…”
