Introduction: Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a metabolic ailment which occurs as a result of insulin insufficiency or defect in insulin function, or both that leads to ihyperglycemia. Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide disease even though its prevalence in other countries vary. Kalanchoe crenata belongs to the family crassulaceae. It is also known locally as miracle plant and often utilized in Africa for medicinal purposes. The study was designed to ascertain the antidiabetic and dyslipidemic activity and effects of the ethanolic extract of both leaves and stem of Kalanchoe crenata on istreptozotocin incite diabetic rats for three (3) weeks. Methodology: 6-8 weeks old Sprague dawley rats received multiple injection of streptozotocin intraperitoneally (40mg/kg body weight) to induce diabetes melitus. Diabetes mellitus was observed and confirmed after six days of induction. The rats were given ethanolic extract of Kalanchoe crenata remarkably (10, 30 and 100mg/kg) and 5mg/kg glibenclamide orally twice daily for three weeks. Blood glucose, lipids, creatinine, urea, were then determined. Results: After week three of treatment 5mg/kg glibenclamide, 30 and 100mg/kg ethanolic extract of Kalanchoe crenata remarkably (p<0.05) decrease glycemia and improved lipidemia by decreasing overall cholesterol, LDL-C and increasing HDL-C likened to the control diabetic group. Also results from treated rats remarkably decrease blood urea nitrogen and creatinine. However, the affirmative control and the sampled treated groups showed curative and regenerative effect in the cells responsible for producing endocrine insulin “beta cells of the islets of Langerhans” located in the pancreas. Kidney and liver tissue sections of treatment groups showed a reversal of diseased insults made by the streptozotocin. Conclusion: The outcome of the research indicate that given ethanolic extract of Kalanchoe crenata remarkably contains the necessary phytochemicals for the development of a standard and effective herbal medicine for Diabetes mellitus and related complications and also with no toxic effects on the tissues of the liver, pancreas and kidney.

A large population is suffering from multifactorial urolithiasis worldwide with a reoccurrence rate of almost 70%-80% in males and 47%-60% in females. In the present study, the nephroprotective effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesised by Bryophyllum pinnatum was evaluated in ethylene glycol-induced urolithiasis in rat. B. pinnatum-mediated AgNPs which were found to be spherical and polydispersed particles with an average size of 32.65 nm determined by transmission electron microscopy analysis, and showing an absorption peak at 432 nm by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis, revealing the role of hydroxyl group in the synthesis by Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy analysis, with a zeta potential value of À 15.7 mV. The crystalline nature and fcc structure was demonstrated based on X-ray diffraction analysis. Animal study was performed on 36 male Wistar rats divided into six equal groups, which demonstrated significant increase in serum total protein, albumin and globulin and significant decrease in AST, ALT, creatinine, BUN, calcium and phosphorus in group V and VI when compared with group II and IV. No crystalluria was observed in rats given B. pinnatum AgNPs. Histopathological observations in group V and VI showed mild degenerative changes and restoration or maintenance of kidney parenchyma when compared with group II and IV rats. Thus, the authors conclude with the beneficial preventive and therapeutic nephroprotective effect of B. pinnatum-mediated AgNPs against ethylene glycol-induced urolithiasis in rats.This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License, which permits use and distribution in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited, the use is non-commercial and no modifications or adaptations are made.

PollutiOn is the intrOduction Of contaminantsʹ intO the natural envirOnment that cause adverseʹ change. Gasoline is a toxic and highly flammable liquid consists of various types of aliphatic hydrocarbons, olefins, benzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons including toluene, xylene and a large number of volatile compounds in addition to tetraethyl lead. Gasoline consists of different types of aliphatic hydrocarbons, aryl compounds and some trace elements. Trace elements are several important roles in human bodies, some are essential for enzymes reactions where they attract and facilitate conversion of substrate molecules to specific end products. Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a receptor involved in the regulation of biological responses to planar aromatic hydrocarbons. The aim of the present study is to compare the serum AHR level in the fuel station workers (FSW) with the non-workers as a control group. The other aim is to find out a possible correlation between AHR with trace elements. Sixty male FSW and 30 controls, from ten fuel stations at Al-Najaf City-Iraq, were participated in the present study. The AHR level in serum was measured using ELISA technique. Determine the following metal ions Zn2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+ level in filling station workers (FSW) and control group were measured spectrophotometrically by using ready for use kits. Serum Pb level was carried out using Atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results serum concentration of AHR in FSW group revealed a significant increase (p<0.001) as compared with the control group. No significant difference was noticed in AHR as compered in exposure ≥12years with exposure <12years in FWS. Smoking has no significant correlation with other parameters. Correlation study indicated a correlation between AHR and Age. Serum concentration of Cu2+, Zn2+, K+ and Pb in FSW group revealed a significant increase (p<0.001) as compared with the control group. While Fe3+, Na+ and Mg2+ in FSW group revealed a significant decrease (p<0.001) as compared with the control group. Correlation study indicated a significant negative correlation between serum Pb and AHR while other trace elements showed no significant correlation with AHR in FSW group. There is a significant negative correlation between serum Cu2+ with age while there is significant increase correlation between Zn2+, Mg2+ and Pb with age in FWS group. Conclusion of study is The role of increase AHR on the health in FSW group, attention to use safety gloves and face mask is recommended for FSW and a long follow-up to the studied group is necessary to explore the prognosis of increase AHR in FSW.
