Renal Nephroblastoma in a 17-Month-Old Jack Russell Terrier

Abstract: A 17 mo old female Jack Russell terrier was diagnosed with unilateral primary malignant nephroblastoma. The dog presented with polyuria and polydipsia. Laboratory tests revealed polycythemia and elevated serum erythropoietin levels. Diagnostic imaging (i.e., MRI) revealed a unilateral renal mass without spinal cord involvement. Nephrectomy was performed, and the histopathologic diagnosis was nephroblastoma. The dog did not receive any chemotherapy, and there was no evidence of recurrent disease or metastasis o… Show more

“…There are around 20 reported cases of renal nephroblastoma in the veterinary literature (table 5). More recent reports recently had increased survival times, compared with those previously reported (>19,3 >254 and >30 months5). Treatment has varied between cases from nephrectomy alone to nephrectomy with adjunctive chemotherapy (table 5).…”

“…In veterinary medicine, there are no strict recommendations on adjuvant chemotherapy after nephrectomy in renal nephroblastoma, and the reported outcomes are very diverse (5). There are reports of paediatric renal nephroblastoma that were successfully treated with nephrectomy alone (12,17), but they also rapidly metastasized (9) or were multicentric (11). In the present case, adjuvant chemotherapy was recommended despite the early stage (stage I) and favourable histology of the tumour because of the tumour's elevated weight (530 g).…”
