Renal Manifestations of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex

Abstract: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic condition caused by a mutation in either the TSC1 or TSC2 gene. Disruption of either of these genes leads to impaired production of hamartin or tuberin proteins, leading to the manifestation of skin lesions, tumors and seizures. TSC can manifests in multiple organ systems with the cutaneous and renal systems being the most commonly affected. These manifestations can secondarily lead to the development of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and neurocognitive decl… Show more

“…The most common renal pathologies of TSC include angiomyolipoma, renal cysts, and less frequently, oncocytomas. Secondary to impaired renal function, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease may also develop 21 . Epilepsy and renal diseases caused by renal angiomyolipoma are the main causes of death in TSC 22 .…”

“…Secondary to impaired renal function, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease may also develop. 21 Epilepsy and renal diseases caused by renal angiomyolipoma are the main causes of death in TSC. 22 No renal pathology was detected in any of our cases that would impair renal functions, and the seizures of patients with epilepsy were under control with antiepileptics.…”

“…In TSC patients, some primary renal lesions might appear as benign angiomyolipoma (AML), epithelial cysts, oncocytoma, malignant angiomyolipoma, and RCC 12 . Renal angiomyolipoma is histologically made up of smooth muscle, blood vessels, fatty tissue, and connective tissue 13 .…”

“…El 80% desarrolla angiomiolipomas renales, pero también pueden aparecer en otros órganos con menor frecuencia. Los an giomiolipomas renales suelen ser una manifes tación más frecuente en las mujeres debido a la presencia de aumento de los receptores de estrógeno y progesterona en los tumores [3,4].…”
