Renal Lymphoma: CT Patterns with Emphasis on Helical CT

Abstract: Renal lymphoma is most often seen in conjunction with multisystemic, disseminated lymphoma or as tumor recurrence. Renal lymphoma may also be seen in immunocompromised patients or, rarely, as primary disease. Computed tomography (CT) is the most sensitive, efficient, and comprehensive examination for evaluation of the kidneys in patients with suspected renal lymphoma. Helical CT in particular improves detection and characterization of lymphomatous renal involvement by optimizing contrast dynamics and data acqu… Show more

“…Enhanced metastatic colonization of multiple organs in timp-3 À/À mice Lymphoma is known to metastasize the kidney in humans (Urban and Fishman, 2000). Therefore, we selected EL-4, a murine lymphoma cell line to further study kidney metastasis.…”

“…Proteolytic remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) facilitates multiple stages of cancer dissemination including tumor angiogenesis, invasion, migration, extravasation and colonization of secondary site (Chang and Werb, 2001). The common sites of metastasis for solid tumors are the lung, liver, bone and brain, whereas lymphomas frequently affect the kidney (Urban and Fishman, 2000;Perez et al, 2001). These tissues have specific morphology, cellular and ECM composition, and levels of growth factors and cytokines, and provide a distinct 'soil' for the metastatic cancer cells.…”

“…8 In addition to lymphoma, differential diagnosis of multiple solid renal masses include benign primary neoplasms such as angiomylipomas and oncocytomas, malignant primary neoplasms such as renal cell carcinomas (RCC), metastases, leukemia, and non-neoplastic conditions such as pyelonephritis and infarction. 9,10 Lymphomatous involvement of the kidneys are rare; it is detected in only 3%-8% of patients undergoing CT staging for lymphoma. 9 Lymphoma typically involves the kidney in one of several recognizable patterns, including solitary or multiple renal masses, renal involvement from contiguous retroperitoneal or peritoneal disease, and diffuse renal infiltration.…”

“…This feature can facilitate the diagnosis, given the appropriate clinical history (27). However, on rare occasion lymphoma may initially present as a solitary renal mass or a homogeneous infiltrating renal mass (which can enlarge the kidney, which usually maintains a reniform shape) in a patient with no history of lymphoma (27)(28)(29). Renal lymphoma is characteristically hypovascular, which can be helpful in suggesting the proper diagnosis and differentiating it from RCC (which is typically more vascular).…”
