Renal involvement in sepsis: A prospective single-center study of 136 cases

Abstract: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an independent risk factor for mortality in sepsis syndrome. Few Indian studies have focused on describing the epidemiology of sepsis with AKI. Adult patients with sepsis-induced AKI were evaluated for the clinical characteristics and outcome and to correlate various parameters associated with sepsis to the outcome of patients. This prospective study included 136 patients with sepsis-induced AKI between 2007 and 2009. All patients required renal replacement therapy. Males comprised… Show more

“…[20] However, a study in India by Shah et al ., found urogenital infection to be the most common source of sepsis in patients who developed AKI. [27] Acute GE was the second most common cause of AKI in our study. The higher number might be attributed to the fact that our institution is a tertiary care center, managing patients referred after developing renal complications.…”

“…Hemodynamic changes in sepsis may predispose the elderly to acute kidney injury (AKI), especially if they have underlying chronic kidney disease (CKD) [ 41 ] . Most common renal manifestation of sepsis is AKI [ 42 ] . In a study by Romao et al, sepsis in itself or in combination with other factors such as hypotension and nephrotoxic medications was responsible for AKI in the elderly [ 43 ] .…”
