Renal Fluid and Electrolyte Handling in Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (300-400 g) were made diabetic by an i.p. injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 60 mg/kg in citrate buffer, n = 8) to examine renal function in well-established diabetes mellitus. Vehicle-injected animals (n = 8) acted as controls. The mean weekly total amounts of food taken by control and STZ-diabetic rats did not differ, but diabetic rats exhibited diarrhea and drank more water. STZ-diabetic rats progressively lost weight from the first to the third week but gained weight in the fourth w… Show more

“…This point is in agreement with the findings of other reports (Greene and Lattimer, 1983;Kim et al, 2006;Mazloomi et al, 2010;Musabayane et al, 1995;Ramesh and Pugalendi, 2006;Sajedianfard et al, 2013). In the diabetic control group, from the first day until the end of the study weight loss was 24.5%.…”

“…3,4 Indeed, OA appears to reverse the previously reported inability of the kidney to excrete Na þ in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. 5 These findings suggest that OA may be influencing transport processes in the proximal tubule, the site for the reabsorption of approximately two-thirds of the Na þ that enters the tubular fluid by glomerular filtration. Accordingly, the study investigated the effects of OA on proximal tubular Na þ handling using renal lithium clearance.…”

“…9 The focus of this paper was to determine whether sustained controlled insulin release from insulin-containing dermal patches can improve the impaired renal fluid and electrolyte handling of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Several studies have reported compromised renal function in experimental diabetes 10,11 and diabetic patients.…”
