Renal cell carcinoma metastases to the maxillary sinus

Abstract: Metastasis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) to the head and neck region is rare. We report the case of a 65-year-old man with history of RCC, presented 7 years after nephrectomy, adrenalectomy and lung metastasectomy for his primary tumour, with symptoms of nasal obstruction, postnasal drip, productive cough and pressure sensation in the left maxillary sinus. CT revealed a unilateral, irregular opacification in the left maxillary sinus with bony erosion of the infraorbital canal wall. A yellow cystic lesion was c… Show more

“…Generally, renal cell carcinomas are neither very radiosensitive nor very chemosensitive [6] , [7] , [14] , [15] . However, some studies have shown that the use of high doses of radiotherapy can be effective.…”

“…RCC is the most common infraclavicular primary tumor that metastasizes to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses with an incidence of 15% [ 7 , 8 ]. Approximately 100 cases of maxillary metastases have been reported in literature till now [ 9 ]. RCC encompasses a histologically diverse group of solid renal tumors.…”

“…Many metastatic tumors originating from renal cancer develop in multiples, but most metastatic tumors in the nasal or paranasal sinuses are single and are treated surgically. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] In this case, CT and MRI indicated no evidence of intracranial extension or bony defect of the skull base, and complete resection by endoscopy was performed. However, endoscopic surgery for tumor(s) in sphenoid sinus is still challenging because of the narrow working space, the angled, anatomically variable sphenoid sinus and the proximity to the optic canal, internal carotid artery and skull base.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] Recently, kinase inhibitors, including sorafenib, sunitinib and temsirolimus, were used in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma. 1,3,6,7 In conclusion, although metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the sphenoid sinus is rare, it might be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses in the paranasal sinus even long after initial treatment of renal cancer. Endoscopic management might be considered in suitable cases.…”
