Renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) has the highest mortality rate of the genitourinary cancers and the incidence of RCC has risen steadily. If detected early, RCC is curable by surgery although a minority are at risk of recurrence. Increasing incidental detection and an ageing population has led to active surveillance as an option for patients with small renal masses. RCC is heterogeneous and comprises several histological cell types with different genetics, biology and behavior. The identification of the genes predis… Show more

“…Chromophobe RCCs are tumors that are composed of large polygonal cells, are transparent, and have light reticular cytoplasm and distinct cell membranes (3). Of the most common RCCs, 80-90% are clear cell, 10-15% are papillary, and 4-5% are chromophobe RCCs (8). Consistent with the literature, RCC was identified as the most common tumor in our study.…”

“…The incidence of RCC increases by a rate of 2-4% every year and ranks highest in deaths due to genitourinary cancers (8). According to the values of the European Association of Urology, the male/female incidence ratio is 1.5, and it was most common in the fifth and sixth decades.…”

“…2 RCC is the third most prevalent urological cancer after prostate and bladder cancers and the mortality rate is >40%. 3 It has been estimated that 65 150 new cases of renal cancer will be diagnosed in 2013, resulting in approximately 13 680 deaths, 4 and the vast majority of these cases will be caused by RCC.…”

“…(1) In the USA, the incidence and mortality rates of RCC have increased in recent years, with approximately 58 000 new cases and 13 000 deaths in 2010. (2) Although surgery is curative for localized disease, a significant percentage of patients developed relapses or metastases with poor prognosis. (3,4) Therefore, researchers have become interested in elucidating the molecular mechanisms of RCC oncogenesis and metastasis, which could lead to development of better prognostic, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions for the disease.…”
