Removal of Strontium-90 from Milk

Abstract: Islands are structurally related to Africa they cannot be regarded as truly oceanic. Leucite, in these continental potash-rich, basic and ultrabasic lavas, is normally an early-formed idiomorphic minoral occurring as both phenocrysts and in the ground-mass as discrete octahedra and does not commonly occur interstitially. In other oceanic suites, under-saturation with respect to Si0 2 appears to lead to t,ho cryste, llization of nepheline and/or melilite, not leucite. It is most unlikely that the late-stage forma… Show more

“…Tri-calcium phosphate added to milk will remove 95 % of 90 Sr introduced in vitro if the mixture is held at 70 °C for 5 min (Silverman, Ghosh & Belcher, 1963). This, of course, is essentially a process of ion exchange but as 30 % of the milk protein and 50 % of the calcium are removed at the same time (Edmondson, Landgrebe, Sadler & Walter, 1965) the method is not feasible for large-scale use.…”
