Remazol Brilliant Blue dye (RBB) is a harmful dye from the textile industry that can damage the environment and aquatic life. Since RBB is impossible to degrade in water by primary and secondary wastewater treatment, its removal is a challenge. An excellent treatment procedure is urgently anticipated to avoid the pollution spreading into the environment. Moreover, rice husk waste (RH) in Malaysia is abundant and generally dumped into landfills. Turning the waste into a value‐added product such as biochar as an effective adsorbent material for treating water pollutants is one of the initiatives in realizing the circular economy agenda. This study develops an organic porous material of biochar from RH and assesses the kinetic of RBB adsorption onto the rice husk biochar (RHB) in aqueous solution. The production of RHB was optimized by pyrolysis procedure at various temperatures, times, and particle sizes. The removal of RBB dye by RHB was investigated at different exposure times from 0 to 120 min under 100 rpm shaken and immersed conditions. The reduction of RBB concentrations using different RHB pyrolysis conditions has also been investigated. The dye removal efficiency by RHB increased with time and the highest removal efficiency (69.3%) was achieved by the smallest particle size of RHB which was produced at the highest pyrolysis temperature of 400°C (RHB‐400). The total pore volume and BET surface area of RHB‐400 were found to be 50.4827 m2/g and 0.00875 cm3/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetic study signifies that maximum adsorption has been completed within 90–120 min depending on the RHB conditions whereas two kinetic models such as pseudo‐first order and pseudo‐second order kinetic models were utilized to fit the experimental data and the results are more consistent with pseudo‐second order kinetic models. This study revealed that RHB can be used as adsorbent materials for dye removals, yet it is economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable.

Remazol brilliant blue (RBB) is an anthraquinone anionic dye that has several commercial uses, especially in the textile industries and is well-known for its detrimental impacts on marine life and the surrounding ecosystem. Mercury (Hg2+) is also one of the most severe hazardous environmental contaminants due to its bioaccumulation through the food chain and high toxicity to the human embryo and fetus. The biosorption potential of Gelidium corneum biomass for bioremoval of Hg2+ and RBB dye simultaneously from binary mixture was assessed. The effects of initial pH, contact time, Hg2+, RBB, and biomass concentrations on the biosorption process were investigated in 50 batch experiments using a Face-centered central composite design. The maximum removal percentage of Hg2+ (98.25%) was achieved in the run no. 14, under optimum experimental conditions: 200 mg/L Hg2+, 75 mg/L RBB, pH 5. At 30 °C, 4 g/L algal biomass was used, with a contact time of 180 min. Whereas, the maximum removal percentage of RBB (89.18%) was obtained in the run no. 49 using 200 mg/L Hg2+, 100 mg/L RBB, pH 5, 4 g/L algal biomass and 180 min of contact time. FTIR analysis of Gelidium corneum biomass surface demonstrated the presence of many functional groups that are important binding sites responsible for Hg2+ and RBB biosorption. SEM analysis showed apparent morphological alterations including surface shrinkage and the appearance of new shiny adsorbate ion particles on the Gelidium corneum biomass surface after the biosorption process. The EDX study reveals an additional optical absorption peak for Hg2+, confirming the role of Gelidium corneum biomass in Hg2+ biosorption. In conclusion, Gelidium corneum biomass has been shown to be an eco-friendly, sustainable, promising, cost-effective and biodegradable biosorbent to simultaneously biosorb Hg2+ and RBB dye from aquatic ecosystems.

Struvite precipitation is an efficient approach to recover phosphorus and ammonium from wastewater to alleviate many operational as well as environmental issues. The sparingly soluble nature of struvite in water makes it a potential slow‐release fertilizer whose adequacy has been investigated in various soil‐based cultivation. However, struvite has diverse applications other than field usage which are yet to be explored. The review highlights the usage of struvite as a fertilizer in soil along with its other applications as a nutrient supplier in hydroponic systems, fire retardants, and sorbent for the adsorption of heavy metals, dye, and gases. The research gaps between the lab and the application of the struvite products in the market for its proper utilization have also been reported.
