Removal of prometryn from hydroponic media using marsh pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris L.)

Abstract: The aquatic plant Hydrocotyle vulgaris was evaluated for its efficacy in removing prometryn from nutrient solution. Under optimized experimental conditions, up to 94.0% of the initial prometryn was removed from the hydroponic culture medium by H. vulgaris in 30 days. The concentration of prometryn decreased from the initial level of 0.55 ± 0.013 mg/L to 0.036 ± 0.001 mg/L at the end of the experimental period. The removal kinetics followed first-order kinetic equation (Ct = 0.4569e). Half-life (t) of prometryn… Show more

“…Most intensive horticulture areas or peri-urban farms have been studied ( Polder et al, 2016 ; Zhang et al, 2013 ). Soilless cultures were also addressed ( Savvas & Gruda, 2018 ) but were mainly used for modelling studies and did not reflect real case risks ( Ni et al, 2018 ; Yang et al, 2019 ).…”

“…H. vulgaris Lam is well-known for its efficient sewage purification and is frequently employed as an alternative aquatic plant for remediating landscape water pollution [6,16]. However, the combined use of phytohormones and H. vulgaris Lam for eutrophic water remediation has not been extensively researched.…”

“…pennywort can remove prometryn from hydroponic media (Ni et al, 2018, Sun et al, 2016b, Compared with the efficiency of Vetiver grass and marsh pennywort for removal of prometryn from hydroponic media, Canna indica is also a good potential candidate for removal of prometyn. Possibly, these plants can be used for phytoremediation (Sun et al, 2016).…”
