Removal of Paraquat from Aqueous Solutions onto Zeolite LTL

Abstract: Zeolite LTL (K_LTL and H_LTL) was used as adsorbent for the adsorption of herbicide paraquat from an aqueous solution. The characterization of zeolite LTL has been carried out through various techniques: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and surface analysis. The adsorption occurred through cation exchange and the results showed that the adsorption capacity of paraquat onto K_LTL (161.71 mg/g) is higher than H_LTL (25.67 mg/g). These results can be expl… Show more

“…Among the adsorption isotherms that can be used for the description of adsorption of pesticides onto unmodified and modified zeolites, Langmuir's and Freundlich's models also dominate (around 90% of reported data). Langmuir model was applicable for adsorption of paraquat [106,114,115,117], α-endosulfan [121], 2,4-D [106], and fipronil [122]; Freundlich model may be used for explanation of adsorption of simazine [123,124], nico-sulfuron [130], and mesosulfuron-methyl [108], while Langmuir-Freundlich model was applicable for adsorption of nicosulfuron [131]. Adsorption of glyphosate may be attributed to the different adsorption isotherm models depending on the adsorbent used.…”

“…The importance of the Si/Al ratio with regarding to the adsorption capacity of zeolites was also emphasized by Insuwan and Rangsriwatananon [117], who studied zeolite LTL modified with potassium (K_LTL) and in proton form (H_LTL) as adsorbents for paraquat. The results of their study revealed that the tendency of adsorption efficiency was comparable to that of aluminum content, which suggests that the immobilization depends on the Si/Al ratio.…”

“…Paraquat concentrations of 30.69-134.08 µg/L were detected in a stream in Mai Chau province, Vietnam (Thi Hue et al, 2018). Paraquat concentrations of 9.3-87.0 µg/L were reported in surface water in Thailand (Insuwan and Rangsriwatananon, 2017). In Malaysia, 0.6-6.9 µg/L of paraquat residue was detected in water samples (Ismail et al, 2011).…”

“…In numerous studies, various adsorbents (herbal, chemical, mineral) have been used to improve the quality of wastewater [14,15]. Among these adsorbents, minerals such as dolomite, zeolite, pumice and vermiculite, are gained acceptable usage because of availability and economic justification [16,17]. Recently, studies have been conducted on the probability of using adsorbents as part of porous concrete in order to improve the quality of wastewater.…”
