Removal of Organic Pollutants from Tofu-Processing Wastewater through Anaerobic Treatment Process with Short Hydraulic Retention Time

Abstract: Anaerobic digestion of tofu-processing wastewater was carried out in batch and continuous systems. The performance of a continuous system was investigated at the hydraulic retention time of 10 days and the organic loading rate of 0.752 kg/m 3 day. Anaerobic digestion operated in the continuous system generated higher biogas yield (123 mL/g VS) compared with the batch system (43 mL/g VS). The assessment of biodegradation efficiency showed that a continuous reactor had higher VS reduction (76%) in comparison wit… Show more

“…The pH level required for acid-forming bacteria and methane-forming bacteria to grow should be higher than 5.2 and 6.2, respectively, for an acceptable level of enzymatic activity (Pramanik et al, 2019). Then, low pH in the anaerobic digestion may have been caused by a prolonged lag phase of microbial growth (Darwin et al, 2019). This result is in line with the study by Azouma et al (2019), who studied biogas production from pineapple waste.…”

“…However, a previous study has 22 reported that methane could be generated under acidic condition. Darwin et al (2019) who studied treating tofu-23 processing wastewater by anaerobic treatment found that anaerobic digestion could reduce organic wastes and 24 convert into biogas although the influent was too acidic (pH 5). 25…”

“…The water content was measured by a laboratory heating and drying oven, in which the sample was heated for approx. 24 h at 105 °C (Rice et al 2017;Darwin et al 2019b;Darwin et al 2021b). The flash, fire cloud and pour points were measured using a laboratory hot plate equipped with a digital thermocouple.…”

“…The process of anaerobic co-digestion of cow-manure and POME was carried out under the continuous operation. Under the anoxic condition, the complete decomposition of organic materials could generate methane gas as the main product [19]. The characteristics of substrates used for the anaerobic composting process would determine the organic decomposition rates, methane productivity and methane yield [20].…”
