Removal of nutrients and organic pollutants from domestic wastewater treatment by sponge-based moving bed biofilm reactor

Abstract: This study evaluates the efficiency of domestic wastewater treatment via Sponge-Based Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (S-MBBR). The laboratory-based treatment plan uses polyurethane sponge with a specific surface area was 260 m2/m3 as a carrier. The treatment plan operated under four different organic load rate: OLR1 = 0.4 kg BOD/m3.day; OLR2 = 0.6 kg BOD/m3.day; OLR3 = 0.8 kg BOD/m3.day; and OLR4 = 1.… Show more

“…However, it is advised that the filling ratio should not surpass 70% to ensure optimal mixing properties of the carriers 52 . Studies employing sponge-based carriers did not exceed filling ratios of 30% 54 , 66 . Moreover, the F/M ratios in the 10%, 20%, and 30% filling ratios were 1.4, 1, and 1.05 g COD/g MLVSS d, respectively.…”

“…The second factor included TSS, BOD, TKN and total P. The variables included in this cluster can be related to the supply of treated wastewater (Campo et al, 2020;Nhut et al, 2020), in which usually carbon compounds described by the parameter COD, BOD or TOC and nitrogen and phosphorus compounds are present (We et al, 2020). A particularly important variable in this cluster is BOD and total P. which indicate the inflow of carbon and phosphorus compounds (Kang et al, 2020).…”

“…The sponge-based moving bed biofilm reactor has been used for nutrient and organic pollutant removal from domestic wastewater. The results showed that on day 80, the maximum COD, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus removal rates were 85.00%, 68.90%, and 40.30%, respectively (Nhut et al 2020). Phosphorus was removed by Libecki and Mikolajczyk (2021) using micro-electrolysis and sedimentation.…”
