Removal of Ni(II) from aqueous solutions by an Arthrobacter viscosus biofilm supported on zeolite: From laboratory to pilot scale

Abstract: This study discusses the retention of Ni(II) by Arthrobacter viscosus supported on zeolite 13 X in batch mode and in continuous mode, at laboratory scale and at pilot scale. The maximum adsorption capacities of 28.37, 20.21 and 11.13 mg/g were recorded for lab scale batch, for continuous lab scale minicolumns and for pilot scale bioreactors, respectively. The Sips isotherm and pseudo second order kinetics described well the observations registered in batch assays. The Adams-Bohart, Thomas and Yoon-Nelson model… Show more

“…Table 5 compares the adsorption capacities of the adsorbent obtained in this work with different adsorbents previously used for removal of Ni (II). It can be seen from Table 5 that the adsorption capacities of the synthesized adsorbent for Ni (II) are much higher than that of many other previously reported adsorbents, indicating that the prepared adsorbent has great potential application in Ni (II) removal from aqueous solution [63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74].…”

“…Adams-Bohart model. Adams-Bohart model assumes that equilibrium is not instant, and the adsorption rate is controlled by external mass transfer (Quintelas et al, 2013). This model is appropriate for analyzing the initial part of the breakthrough curve (C t /C o = 0-0.5) (Long et al, 2014;Sharma and Singh, 2013).…”

“…Quintelas et al (2009Quintelas et al ( , 2013 reported that the Escherichia coli bio-film on modified zeolite is a very promising way to remove metal ions from effluents due to the fact that both components have an affinity for metal cations. Pazos et al (2010) demonstrated the efficiency of a zeolite-bacteria system while Holan and Volesky (1994) explained that immobilised microbial cells offer many advantages including better reusability, high biomass loading and minimum clogging in continuous flow systems.…”
