Removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions by poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid-co-itaconic acid) hydrogels

Abstract: In this study, removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution by poly(AMPS-co-IA) hydrogels was examined by batch equilibration technique. The effects of monomer ratio, concentration of initiator and crosslinker, pH, adsorption time, initial dye concentration and adsorption temperature on the removal of MB were studied. The results show that the removal of MB was highly effected by preparation conditions of hydrogel. The maximum removal was observed at 10/90 IA/AMPS monomer ratio, 1.0% KPS, and 10.0% MBA… Show more

“…The bands at 1212 and 1028 cm −1 are attributed to asymmetric and symmetric stretching of O=S=O of -SO 3 H groups respectively. 35 The FTIR spectrum of Pec-g-PAMPS-2-MNC ( Fig. 2(c)) appears similar to the spectrum of Pec-g-PAMPS-2 with an additional band at 567 cm −1 which is attributed to Fe-O bond confirming the presence of Fe 3 O 4 inside the gel.…”

“…The band at 1612 cm −1 is assigned to stretching vibration of C=O present in carboxamide group and the band at 1726 cm −1 is attributed to C=O of the COOCH 3 group. “…When both hydroxy groups of CHDM undergo acylation, the trans and cis configurations potentially lead to the formation of three isomers each. Two products have both OH groups esterified with either two C f (1,6) or with two C s (2, 7), the third one presents one C f and one C s as acyl groups. The trans configuration allows, in all cases, for the placing of both substituents in equatorial positions (5,6).…”

“…[3] Applications for this kind of polymers are widespread and range from dental materials, [4] elastomers, [5] drug-delivery and other biomedical and biotechnological applications. [6] Nevertheless, there has only been little work in the field of poly(itaconate)s because the chemical polycondensation of IA takes place at temperature above 150°C and leads to Ordelt saturation, cross-linking and isomerization of the C=C bond. [7] While the radical reactions were avoided using inhibitors such as MeHQ, BHT or quinol, [4,5] no effective solution has been identified so far to prevent the attack of the diol to the vinyl group via oxa-Michael addition (Ordelt saturation).…”
