Novel hydrogel systems based on polyacrylamide/chitosan (PAAM/chitosan) or polyacrylic acid/alginate (PAA/alginate) were prepared, characterized, and applied to reduce the concentrations of dyes in water. These hydrogels were synthetized via a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) and then characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and their swelling capacities in water were measured. In the adsorption experiments, methylene blue (MB) was used as a cationic dye, and methyl orange (MO) was used as an anionic dye. The study was carried out using a successive batch method for the dye absorption process and an equilibrium system to investigate the adsorption of MO on PAAM/chitosan hydrogels and MB on PAA/alginate in separate experiments. The results showed that the target hydrogels were synthetized with high yield (more than 90%). The chemical structure of the hydrogels was corroborated by FTIR, and their high thermal stability was verified by TGA. The absorption of the MO dye was higher at pH 3.0 using PAAM/chitosan, and it had the ability to remove 43% of MO within 10 min using 0.05 g of hydrogel. The presence of interfering salts resulted in a 20–60% decrease in the absorption of MO. On the other hand, the absorption of the MB dye was higher at pH 8.5 using PAA/alginate, and it had the ability to remove 96% of MB within 10 min using 0.05 g of hydrogel, and its removal capacity was stable for interfering salts.

In this work, we treated wastewater from the detergent manufacturing industry on natural carriers and by-products from a coal-fired thermal power plant. The filtration was carried out by infiltration- percolation using a vertical cylindrical column manufactured in our laboratory. The main parameters analyzed before and after treatment are: suspended matter (SM), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and pH. This treatment system achieved a reduction of 89% COD, 73% BOD5, 54% SS and (66-99%) heavy metals. The COD/BOD5 rejection ratio before treatment, which was greater than 4.24, has become less than 1.73. Thus, impedance measurements of the wastewater before and after treatment were carried out. The results of the electrical parameters deduced from the impedance spectra show a good correlation with the parameters obtained by the classical methods.

Evaporitic technology for lithium mining from brines has been questioned for its intensive water use, protracted duration and exclusive application to continental brines. In this Review, we analyse the environmental impacts of evaporitic and alternative technologies, collectively known as direct lithium extraction (DLE), for lithium mining, focusing on requirements for fresh water, chemicals, energy consumption and waste generation, including spent brines. DLE technologies aim to tackle the environmental and techno-economic shortcomings of current practice by avoiding brine evaporation. A selection of DLE technologies has achieved Li + recovery above 95%, Li + /Mg 2+ separation above 100, and zero chemical approaches. Conversely, only 30% of DLE test experiments were performed on real brines, and thus the effect of multivalent ions or large Na + /Li + concentration differences on performance indicators is often not evaluated. Some DLE technologies involve brine pH changes or brine heating up to 80 o C for improved Li + recovery, which require energy, fresh water and chemicals that must be considered during environmental impact assessments. Future research should focus on performing tests on real brines and achieving competitiveness in several performance indicators simultaneously. The environmental impact of DLE should be assessed from brine pumping to the production of the pure solid lithium product. Sections Lithium mining from continental brinesAs of 2022, worldwide, there are eight full-scale active facilities that produce lithium compounds from continental brines 9 and more are likely to become active before 2030 (Fig. 1a). The evaporitic technology (Fig. 1b) is currently in use at seven of those facilities 18,19 . Brines are Key points• Fresh water consumption of direct lithium extraction (DLE) needs to be urgently quantified.
