A novel phytic acid impregnated polyaniline (PA-PANI) was synthesized by a in situ polymerization and supermolecular self-assembly method and has been used as an adsorbent for efficient capture of U(VI) from aqueous solution. The structure and morphology of the adsorbent were well characterized. The influence of different factors such as pH value, ionic strength, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration and temperature on the adsorption of U(VI) onto PA-PANI-3 were carried out by batch adsorption experiments. The results demonstrated an enhanced U(VI) adsorption capacity of 86.6 mg/g for PA-PANI-3, greatly exceeding that of polyaniline (PANI, 8.8 mg/g). The adsorption process follows the pseudo-secondorder kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 90.3 mg/g. According to the calculation from the Dubinin−Radushkevich isotherm model equation, it is suggested that the adsorption is mainly a chemical adsorption mechanism. U(VI) is adsorbed on PA-PANI-3 via the phosphoric acid, amine, and imine groups. The U(VI) can be desorbed from the U(VI) adsorbed PA-PANI-3 with a desorption efficiency of 90.8% by using 0.1 mol/L Na 2 CO 3 solution. This study demonstrated that PA-PANI could be used as an efficient adsorbent for removal and recovery of U(VI) from aqueous solution.

This study emphasizes rapid and simultaneous adsorptive removal of estrogenic hormones (EHs): estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and estriol (E3) from wastewater using recycled waste cigarette electrospun nanofibers (WCENFs). The nanofibers exhibited a small diameter (196±65 nm) and large surface area (18.05 m 2 /g), along with a strong affinity towards all EHs by adsorption due to abundant hydrogen bonding interactions. A one-step high-performance liquid chromatography technique was developed to detect each EH present in the solution simultaneously. The adsorption kinetics helps select optimum conditions for the large-scale removal process, so experimental data using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion, Elovich, and fractional power models were fitted. It was found that E1, E2, and EE2 followed pseudo-second-order kinetics while E3 followed pseudo-first-order kinetic models. The total adsorption capacity on WCENFs was determined to be 2.14 mg/g, whereas the individual adsorption capacities of E1, E2, EE2, and E3 were found to be 0.551, 0.532, 0.687, and 0.369 mg/g, respectively. The percentage efficiency of WCENFs was highest with EE2 ~64.3% and least with E3 ~34.6%. Adsorption-desorption studies revealed that WCENFs could repeatedly be used four times. The reported results indicate a significant potential of WCENFs to be an effective sorbent and portable filter for simultaneous estrogenic hormone removal. WCENFs filter is a suitable alternative to commercial Cellulose acetate filters.

Anaerobic Digester (AD) waste known as digestate (spent anaerobically digested effluents) of agricultural origin was collected for use in a feasibility study on the use of membrane filtration to fractionate phosphate and ammonia from digestate into nutrient streams. The digestate was pretreated to remove bulk solids and then filtered using diafiltration (DF) with ultrafiltration (UF) (5.65 psi TMP) and then nanofiltration (NF) (operating pressure 253.82 psi). Having set the pre-treated effluents at pH 4.0, retention of phosphate reached 6.78 mmols L-1 during UF with lower values being achieved with repeated DF steps. In contrast, nitrogen retention was lower at 8.21 mmols L-1 that were continuously dropping at each DF step. During NF phosphorus was shown to be strongly retained by the membrane at 31.8 mmols L-1 , while retention of ammonium was low at 13.4 mmols L-1 demonstrating the potential for this combination of membrane types for fractionating high value components from AD waste.
