Removal characteristics of two anionic dyes by a polyethylenimine/poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) gel

Abstract: The highly efficient gel obtained via the copolymerization of polyethylenimine and poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) was successfully applied to remove two anionic dyes (amaranth and sunset yellow) from their aqueous solutions.

“…More specifically, the value of R L determines the nature of adsorption as undesirable (R L 4 1), linear (R L = 1), desirable (0 o R L o 1), and irreversible (R L = 0). 53,54 As shown in Table S4 (ESI †), the values of the R L equilibrium parameters for the adsorption of both dyes on the tannin are in the range of 0 to 1. Therefore, the adsorption process is desirable.…”

“…In the adsorption of CR by the hydrogel, the rate-limiting step appears to be a chemical interaction involving exchange and sharing of electrons between the tertiary amino moiety of AcrNPP and the dye molecule [32], [55]. Similar adsorption process has been observed for cationic hydrogels based on dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate [56], [57]. Fig.…”

“…13) is linear with a regression coefficient of 0.9940, suggesting that pore diffusion is also involved in the uptake of CR by the hydrogel. Deviation from linearity is observed at longer time which further suggests that adsorbate pore diffusion is not the only rate limiting step in this adsorption [2], [32], [56]- [58].…”
