Remote sensing versus the area sampling frame method in paddy rice acreage estimation in Indramayu regency, West Java province, Indonesia

Abstract: With a population of 267 million, Indonesia faces the significant challenge of inaccurate rice production data leading to a flawed national rice import policy and supply problems. Its 2018 rice production and harvest area data were generated through the Area Sampling Frame (ASF) method which incurred high labour and financial costs as well as failing to optimize accuracy; hence, an alternative method needs exploration. This study compares ASF and remote sensing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) methods to calcula… Show more

“…In this regard, a large body of literature has used remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) in its research [ 10 , 11 ]. Remote sensing and GIS have advantages such as they are able to cover wide areas in timely, accurate, and affordable ways that allows to replacing mapping that relies on field surveys alone [ 12 ].…”

“…The benefits of using Landsat data are that it is available for a long time span, stable, and free [ 11 ]. It provides appropriate spectral and spatial resolution, has a time revisit of 16 days, and is not as complex as synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery [ 12 ].…”

“…Another limitation is the official rice field area which we used as the masking area, may not be accurate in some areas, especially in the Karawang Regency, where it has a high land-use change frequency [69]. In the future, this study can be combined with a scene-based classification of rice areas using an area sampling framework to increase the accuracy of the machine learning model, thus increasing the consistency over time [70]. Furthermore, the climate can shift the cropping pattern to some extent where the farmer is unable to cultivate rice in a few years, especially in strong El-Nino season [71].…”

“…The launch of Landsat 8 provides more satellite remote sensing (RS) data and makes crop type identification and finer resolution mapping realistic [9,10]. Landsat data have been widely used for agricultural studies as it provides almost 40 years of data archives, is freely available, and is easier for visualization purposes [3,[11][12][13][14].…”
