Remote Sensing Observation of Particulate Organic Carbon in the Pearl River Estuary

Abstract: River estuaries are connectors of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Riverine particulate organic carbon (POC) is discharged into oceans after a series of biogeochemical reactions in estuaries. Satellite monitoring of POC will improve our understanding of the carbon dynamics of these water bodies. Based on in situ data from four seasonal survey cruises, we developed an algorithm for estimating POC concentrations in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). Reflectance ratios, Rrs(678)/Rrs(488) and Rrs(748)/Rrs(412), were… Show more

“…Imagery from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used in the present study, and has been used previously in several other coastal-water studies (Bierman et al 2011;Petus et al 2014a;Chaves et al 2015;Devlin et al 2015;Liu et al 2015). The MODIS sensor is aboard the polarorbiting satellite Aqua, launched in July 2002, and captures the entire earth surface every 1-2 days.…”

“…At each site, the distance between two adjacent sampling sites was greater than 1.5 km. The longitude and latitude coordinates for each site were obtained using a global positioning system receiver, and about 1000-1500 mL of surface water were collected from a 50 cm-water depth for the laboratory measurement of TSM [38].…”

“…In particular, sedimentary OC of the East River tributary received large inputs from riverbank soils, phytoplankton, and agricultural C3 plants in winter but switched to riverbank and mangrove soil inputs in summer [ Fu et al ., ]. Remote sensing techniques and numerical model simulations have also been used in the Pearl River estuary and have observed seasonal and spatial variation in the particulate OC composition, which may be related to enhanced nutrient inputs, water circulation, and changing winds [ Liu et al ., ].…”
