Remote Sensing Applications in Tobacco Yield Estimation and the Recommended Research in Zimbabwe

Abstract: Tobacco crop area and yield forecasts are important in stabilizing tobacco prices at the auction floors. Tobacco yield estimation in Zimbabwe is currently based on statistical surveys and ground-based field reports. These methods are costly, time consuming, and are prone to large errors. Remote sensing can provide timely information on crop spectral characteristics which can be used to estimate crop yields. Remote sensing application on agriculture in Zimbabwe is still very limited. Research should focus on id… Show more

“…In this respect, remotely sensed data becomes an important tool to provide better yield estimation. Using satellite images that can be constantly downloaded, crop yield forecasts can be produced earlier than conventional estimates and can be updated often throughout the growing season (Svotwa et al, 2013). In this regard, multisource image data with high spatial and temporal resolutions can provide an opportunity to estimate sugarcane yield efficiently and effectively over large areas.…”

“…The producers need to monitor crop growth and development, an accurate early production forecast is as relevant for farmers as it is for the entire tobacco industry. Svotwa et al. (2013) reviewed the applications of remote sensing in crop area assessment and yield prediction, some recommendations were given for tobacco such as the Garvin model, feasible VIs, etc.…”

“…This is tested on a UAV image data set which includes fourteen tobacco regions. In 2002 Svotwa et al proposed the use of different vegetation indices for tobacco yield estimation through remote sensing [17]. Keeping in view the importance of this crop new paradigms of research in the detection, classification and field estimation are being carried out today.…”
