Remote Monitoring of Cardiovascular Implantable Devices in the Pediatric Population Improves Detection of Adverse Events

Abstract: With the exponential growth of cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) in pediatric patients, a new method of long-term surveillance, remote monitoring (RM), has become the standard of care. The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of RM as a monitoring tool in the pediatric population. A retrospective review was performed of 198 patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital who had CIEDs. Data transmitted by RM were analyzed. The following data were examined: patient de… Show more

“…70,71 The applications can include transfer of the ECG or viewing of the rhythm on cardiac monitoring at the originating site connected to the pediatric patient. [72][73][74][75] Often, treatment can be started with telecardiology supervision and monitoring that allows the arrhythmia to be converted. Other electrophysiology abnormalities, including prolonged QT syndromes, can be evaluated and managed in this fashion.…”

“…Of these, 11% of transmissions prompted clinical intervention. 73 By providing early detection of patient and system problems, RM reduces the volume of device clinic visits. There are no significant ongoing patient costs for RM, and patients can have international coverage with these portable systems.…”

“…Overall, CGM systems improved diabetes management success, and there were no safety issues identified throughout any of the studies mentioned [5][6][7][8][9][10]. “…HOME MONITORING OF CARDIOVASCULAR IMPLANTABLE DEVICES Cardiovascular implantable devices are being used increasingly in the pediatric population as a method of long-term remote patient monitoring [11]. A variety of research studies have examined the role of remote patient monitoring with implantable devices in decreasing incidence of adverse cardiac events [11][12][13][14]. In these studies, patients with newly implanted cardiac devices were followed either prospectively or retrospectively via remote patient monitoring and compared to patients with the same devices who were monitored traditionally.…”
