Remote monitoring of a deep‐sea marine protected area: The Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents

Abstract: Deep‐sea marine protected areas (MPAs) present particular challenges for management. Their remote location means there is limited knowledge of species and habitat distribution, and rates and scales of change. Yet, evaluating the attainment of conservation objectives and managing the impact of human activities both require a quantitative understanding of natural variability in species composition/abundance and habitat conditions. Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) and Fisheries and Oceans Canada are collaborating in t… Show more

“…The junction boxes provide power and communication to sensors and instruments on seafloor platforms and water column moorings. The Main Endeavour Field instrumentation was initially concentrated on a nearly 50 m-across, actively venting sulphide edifice named Grotto (Kelley et al, 2014;Juniper et al, 2019). A seismometer array, designed to precisely locate shallow micro-seismic events in the hydrothermal up-flow zone below the seafloor, supports study of their links to vent fluid discharge.…”

“…Finally, environmental footprint concerns appeared some 10 years ago and the number of marine protected areas has increased since then. Research activities and observations are a source of disturbance to marine ecosystems (Juniper et al, 2019) and constitute an additional constraint when designing observation systems and operation scenarios.…”

“…Thus, we propose that less well-known areas, such as deep-sea ecosystems and ecosystems in countries with limited financial and technological capacity, should be prioritized for data collection and capacity-building within the post-2020 Framework, as comprehensive datasets are required to minimize bias in protected-area representation ( Roberts, Duffy & Cook, 2019 ). This will require collaboration between scientists, managers, civil associations, and policymakers ( Juniper et al, 2019 ). Novel approaches for more efficient data collection, dissemination, and re-use should also be an urgent priority ( Edgar et al, 2016 ), as well as the incorporation of volunteer-contributed data and local and traditional knowledge into conservation decision making.…”
