Remission of persistent childhood asthma: Early predictors of adult outcomes

Abstract: Background: Few data exist on the predictors of asthma remission by early adulthood in North America. Objective: The predictors of adult asthma remission were determined in a multiethnic population of patients with mild-tomoderate persistent childhood asthma. Methods: Asthma remission in early adulthood was measured by using 2 definitions: a clinical and a strict definition. Both included normal lung function and the absence of symptoms, exacerbations, and medication use. The strict definition also included nor… Show more

“…In our article on childhood asthma remission from the Childhood Asthma Management Program (CAMP) cohort, 1 we identified predictors of both asthma remission and persistence into adulthood. The predicted probability of asthma remission was the highest (82.6%) in subjects with a baseline FEV 1 to forced vital capacity (FEV 1 /FVC) ratio of greater than or equal to 85%, provocative concentration causing a 20% fall in FEV 1 (PC 20 ) of greater than or equal to 1 mg/mL, and serum eosinophil count of less than 500 cells/mL.…”

“…I read with interest the recent article by Ito et al 1 The authors reported that only 2 of 15 patients with skin eruptions after eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori using amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and a proton pump inhibitor had positive results on repeated drug lymphocyte transformation tests (LTTs), and in another patient CD4 1 T cells expressed CD154 in response to the drugs. They elegantly demonstrated that a significant proportion of the patients with negative drug-specific responses (9/12) exhibited H pylori-specific immune responses.…”

“…In a previous study, we found that higher fitness was associated with decreased asthma morbidity in adolescent males 14 . Understanding relationships between asthma, aerobic fitness, and sedentary time in young children are critical because the clinical trajectory of childhood asthma has important implications for management, prognosis, and overall health 15,16 . To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no studies evaluating the relationships between asthma, obesity, and aerobic fitness in children less than 9 years of age.…”
