REMEMBERING “THE FATHER OF THE CONTEMPORARY STATE OF CROATIA”. THE CELEBRATION OF TUĐMAN’S BIRTHDAY IN HIS BIRTHPLACE
SJEĆANJE NA "OCA SUVREMENE HRVATSKE". PROSLAVA TUĐMANOVA ROĐENDANA U NJEGOVU RODNOM MJESTU

Abstract: This article explores diverse strategies and mechanisms of remembering Franjo Tuđman, Croatia's first president, after the country gained its independence in 1991. The authors discuss how Tuđman's figure is constructed in contemporary Croatian society by focusing on its use in political discourse and in public space. The article's central part deals with realms of memory in Veliko Trgovišće, Tuđman's birthplace, on the ninety-second anniversary of his birth.

“…However, they emphasised that in using this space multiparty system was visible, that is to say heterogeneity in expressing various political aspirations and ideas (based on the transcript of the interview with Vlatka Filipčić Maligec, from 10 February 2015). In other words, the space around the monument is not being occupied by only one political option nor is the monument being experienced in line with only one political quota system as is the case with places of memory related to other eminent historical persons who are often linked to Matija Gubec and referred to as "the three great sons of Croatian Zagorje" -with monuments and places of birth of Josip Broz Tito and Franjo Tuđman (c.f Belaj and Škrbić Alempijević 2014;Škrbić Alempijević and Hjemdahl 2006)…”
