Remediation of Atrazine-contaminated Soil and Water by Nano Zerovalent Iron

Abstract: Atrazine-contaminated soil may require remediation to mitigate ground and surface water contamination. We determined the effectiveness of nano zerovalent iron (nano ZVI) to dechlorinate atrazine (2-chloro-4ethylamino-6-iso-propylamino-1,3,5-triazine) in contaminated water and soil. This study determined the effects of iron sources, solution pH, Pd catalyst and presence of Fe or Al sulfate salts on the destruction of atrazine in water and soil. Our results indicate nano ZVI can be successfully used to remediate… Show more

“…Several physical and chemical production methods including mechanical milling (Karimi et al 2014), sodium borohydride (Satapanajaru et al 2008;Madhavi et al 2014), ethylene glycol (Raveendran et al 2003), solvothermal method (Basavaraju et al 2011), and carbothermal synthesis (Allabaksh et al 2010) have been employed for the preparation of ZVIN. But ZVIN, synthesized by above conventional methods, agglomerate rapidly in clusters due to Van der Waals and magnetic forces (Qiangu et al 2013).…”

“…The sorbent of Fe 3 O 4 @PS showed a good performance with more than 93.3 % pesticides removal in treating actual water samples (Lan et al 2014). The nanotechnologies have bright application prospect in eliminating the heavy metal pollution Chrysoehoou et al 2012) and remediation contaminated soil (Gao and Zhou 2013;Satapanajaru et al 2008;Wang et al 2010b).…”
