Remarkably High Separation of Neodymium from Praseodymium by Selective Dissolution from their Oxide Mixture using an Ionic Liquid Containing aβ‐Diketone

Arijit Sengupta,

Swarna Prava Mantry
et al.

Abstract: A simple, efficient, and economical method for the mutual separation of Nd and Pr was developed by the selective dissolution of Nd2O3 directly from their oxide mixtures in an ionic liquid containing 2‐thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA) resulting in an unprecedented separation factor (βNd/Pr) > 500, which is 277 times more than the thus far reported βNd/Pr values. The proposed mechanism was supported by DFT computations.

“…Thin-layer oil film extraction was also reported to have enhanced the mutual separation (β Pr/Nd ∼ 10). 26 In our earlier report, a mutual separation of Nd/Pr by selective dissolution in an ionic liquid containing HTTA (2thenoyltrifluoroacetone) as a ligand resulted in a separation factor of ∼598, 7 which is significantly lower than the maximum separation factor value achieved in the present investigation (β Nd/Pr ∼ 700), using HFAA as the β-diketone ligand (instead of HTTA). Moreover, to achieve the maximum β value for HTTA, ∼10 h of dissolution was required, whereas in the present case, only 15 min were sufficient to achieve the same.…”

“…Hence, the separation factor (expressed as the ratio of the distribution ratio or D values) was found to be within 2− 10. To achieve significantly higher separation factor values, a novel methodology has been proposed for the selective dissolution of Nd into the ionic liquid phase directly from the mixtures of their oxides (Nd 2 O 3 and Pr 6 O 11 ), utilizing the difference in their lattice energy of formation values (−34.13 eV for Nd 2 O 3 and −76.29 eV for Pr 6 O 11 ) 7 and thereby avoiding the cumbersome dissolution process. HFAA, a βdiketone, has been used in the ionic liquid C 4 mim.NTf 2 for the controlled release of H + from its enol form arising out of the keto−enol tautomerism.…”
