Seeking highly efficient non-preference electrocatalytic materials that serve photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting in acidic systems is expectant in the context of environmentally friendly production. We designed Ni 2 P electrocatalysts synthesized in oil phases via the hot-bubbling method with superb stability in air and sulfuric acid solution for PEC, which were found with excellent hydrogen evolution performance. A tunable particle size and highly exposed (001) planes of Ni 2 P nanocrystals were achieved. The designed catalysts achieved a notable promotion in the hydrogen evolution reaction activity compared to that of Ni 2 P synthesized in the water phase. More specifically, the electrode prepared by self-assembled Ni 2 P nanoparticles was found to have decent overpotential of η 10 = 164 mV in darkness and was further decreased to 129 mV with irradiation of visible light. The cyclic stability tests manifested brilliant durability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Measurement of the transient photocurrent response and PEC water splitting catalytic performance indicated that the Ni 2 P had high carrier concentration upon irradiation, lower carrier recombination probability, and prolonged photo-response lifetime (3.03−3.14 s).

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution can effectively alleviate the troublesome global energy crisis by converting solar energy into the chemical energy of hydrogen. In order to realize efficient hydrogen generation, a variety of semiconductor materials have been extensively investigated, including TiO2, CdS, g‐C3N4, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), and others. In recent years, to achieve higher photocatalytic performance and reach the level of large‐scale industrial applications, photocatalysts decorated with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have shone brightly because of their low cost, stable physical and chemical properties, and substitution for precious metals of TMPs. This Review highlights the preparation methods and properties associated with photocatalysis of TMPs. Moreover, the H2 generation efficiency of photocatalysts loaded with TMPs and the roles of TMPs in catalytic systems are also studied systematically. Apart from being co‐catalysts, several TMPs can also serve as host catalysts to boost the activity of photocatalytic composites. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of TMPs are put forward, which is valuable for future researchers to expand the application of TMPs in photocatalytic directions and to develop more active photocatalytic systems.

In this study, we first manufactured ultrathin g-C3N4 (CN) nanosheets by thermal etching and ultrasonic techniques. Then, EuVO4 (EV) nanoparticles were loaded onto CN nanosheets to form EuVO4/g-C3N4 heterojunctions (EVCs). The ultrathin and porous structure of the EVCs increased the specific surface area and reaction active sites. The formation of the heterostructure extended visible light absorption and accelerated the separation of charge carriers. These two factors were advantageous to promote the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis, and ultimately enhanced the adsorption capability and photocatalytic removal efficiency of methylene blue (MB). EVC-2 (2 wt% of EV) exhibited the highest adsorption and photocatalytic performance. Almost 100% of MB was eliminated via the adsorption–photocatalysis synergistic process over EVC-2. The MB adsorption capability of EVC-2 was 6.2 times that of CN, and the zero-orderreaction rate constant was 5 times that of CN. The MB adsorption on EVC-2 followed the pseudo second-order kinetics model and the adsorption isotherm data complied with the Langmuir isotherm model. The photocatalytic degradation data of MB on EVC-2 obeyed the zero-order kinetics equation in 0–10 min and abided by the first-order kinetics equation for10–30 min. This study provided a promising EVC heterojunctions with superior synergetic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis for the potential application in wastewater treatment.
