Remarkable diversity of vomeronasal type 2 receptor (OlfC) genes of basal ray-finned fish and its evolutionary trajectory in jawed vertebrates

Abstract: The vomeronasal type 2 receptor (V2R, also called OlfC) multigene family is found in a broad range of jawed vertebrates from cartilaginous fish to tetrapods. V2Rs encode receptors for food-related amino acids in teleost fish, whereas for peptide pheromones in mammals. In addition, V2Rs of teleost fish are phylogenetically distinct from those of tetrapods, implying a drastic change in the V2R repertoire during terrestrial adaptation. To understand the process of diversification of V2Rs in vertebrates from “fish… Show more

“…b, Clade tree generated from (a) with local support values indicated at each node (according to a Shimodaira-Hasegawa test). The V2R gene tree was consistent with previous studies, in particular the one by Zhang et al 109 . As our extensive species sample allowed us to define new clades that were only partially or not at all described in previous studies, we also renamed all these clades.…”

“…Mean values obtained from biological replicates for each gene were used. A particular V2R gene located outside of the main gene cluster of this family and lacking receptor activity is known to be co-expressed with other V2R genes in previously studied vertebrates [ 43 ]. Accordingly, we identified homolog singletons of this gene with very high expression in our studied fish species.…”
