Reliable flow in forward and after-sales supply chains considering propagated uncertainty

Abstract: An integrated mathematical framework for production planning is presented for companies providing product-warranty packages through both their forward and after-sales supply chains. This model integrates manufacturers and merchandisers of the pre-and after-sales operations and incorporates the interactions between forward and after-sales chains. The demands and qualified output of facilities are stochastic. We demonstrate that service levels depend on the local reliability of facilities and that there are crit… Show more

“…The management of spare parts is a critical element in the after-sales service supply chain. Capital goods and consumer durable goods are two important product types which have a long lifetime and require after-sales services [11]. The former are high-value tangible assets used by a company as an input for producing other goods or services, and are also referred to as capital assets.…”

“…In contrast, eight studies adopt the LCC measure and two studies use the TCO measure, respectively. There are four studies using other measures such as company profits of selling products and providing warranty services [11,22], profits of using spare parts inventory pooling among different companies [23], and warranty cost [24]. This observation indicates that research on spare parts inventory management should consider advanced warranty types.…”

“…In today's highly competitive markets, products manufactured by rivals become almost homogeneous from quality and price perspectives. In such markets, to differentiate from rivals and to leverage competition capabilities, an increasing number of companies try to provide better pre- and after-sales services for their customers (Penttinen & Palmer, 2007; Johnson & Mena, 2008; Bijvank et al, 2010; Rezapour & Farahani, 2014; Rezapour et al, 2016a, 2016b; Hasani & Khosrojerdi, 2016; Mohammaddust et al, 2017; Rezapour et al, in press). This marketing strategy has been called “servitization” in the literature (Vandermerwe & Rada, 1988).…”

“…They proposed a stock and price induced demand and found that the stock elasticity plays an important role in contract selection problem. Rezapour et al [41] proposed an integrated mathematical model to coordinate manufacturers and merchandisers of the pre-and aftersales operations considering price and warranty sensitive stochastic demand. A manufacturer-retailer supply chain considered by Lin [30] analyzing price promotion taking into account the reference price effects of consumers.…”
