Reliable Control of Direct PWM AC-AC Buck Converter With Short Circuit Protection

Abstract: In this paper, a reliable control strategy is proposed for the direct pulse-width-modulation (PWM) ac-ac buck converter, to address the commutation problems and also to offer a handling capability against short circuit faults. A number of states are defined for the switching of the ac-ac converter depending on the sensed input voltage, whereby safe and continuous current paths are maintained at all times including voltage zero-crossing points. Moreover, fault handing switching states are able to protect the co… Show more

“…As mentioned, fuses are used in some protection circuits, but in some converters, such as PWM ac-ac converters, the fuse cannot provide adequate protection for semiconductor devices. The proposed control system (Wang and McMahon, 2019) bypasses the fault currents through specified switching modes. Also, safe transient modes are provided between different switching modes that can keep current paths safe.…”

“…Because of this situation, using additional filtering units such as passive filters or coupling transformers is essential to reduce the harmonics of the regulator output voltage. The researchers study AC-AC regulators based on switch-mode operation such as buck [12][13][14][15][16], boost [17,18], and buck-boost [19,20] type regulators for AC regulation for a long time. As the mentioned AC-AC regulators operate in switch-mode and have an internal filtering structured topology, close to sine-wave output voltages without the need for additional filtering units to eliminate the output voltage harmonics can be provided.…”

“…A detailed theoretical analysis and both simulated and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy and circuit topology. The control strategy for the ac-ac buck converter has been briefly introduced in [25]. Substantive new materials, including the application of VO, systematical analysis, power loss study, new hybrid SiC & Si topology, and results, etc., are presented in this paper.…”
