Reliability of the Home Hearing Test: Implications for Public Health

Abstract: Background: The projected increase in the aging population raises concerns about how to manage the healthcare needs in a cost effective way. Within hearing healthcare, there are currently too few audiologists to meet the expected demand, and training more professionals may not be a feasible way of addressing this problem. For this reason, there is a need to develop different ways of assessing hearing sensitivity that can be conducted accurately and inexpensively when a certified audiologist and/or sound-attenu… Show more

“…The theme noted the second most often was lack of desire (laziness, I do not want to, I am too busy, etc) [ 19 , 28 , 34 , 37 , 38 , 49 , 57 , 58 , 60 , 63 , 64 , 67 , 74 , 76 ]. Another theme was cost (too expensive, we live off a fixed income, etc) [ 33 , 38 , 40 , 48 - 50 , 55 , 58 , 63 , 64 , 67 ]. The theme lack of technical support included the following: my friends or family are not able to help me, I do not understand the interface, etc [ 14 , 28 , 34 , 58 , 63 - 65 , 73 , 74 ].…”

“…We analyzed the interactions between interventions and barriers. Ten instances of eHealth interventions were mentioned with technical literacy [ 14 - 16 , 30 , 33 , 37 , 40 , 58 , 59 , 65 , 74 ]. Eight instances of eHealth interventions were mentioned with lack of technical support [ 14 , 28 , 34 , 58 , 59 , 65 , 73 , 74 ].…”

“…Applicability in other chronic lung disease cohorts with increased median age and resource-poor regions also requires evaluation, however, studies in older healthy individuals suggest translatability. 40 Our study highlight the limitations of home web-based testing using off-the-shelf earphones, in uncontrolled (ie, potentially noisy) environments at limited frequencies (ie, speech discrimination range). Although highly specific, web-based testing had poor sensitivity in identifying hearing loss.…”

“…Similarly, limitations of online learning such as a lack of interaction or the absence of immediate impact of the learning are overcome with an eSL model (Waldner et al, 2012). In the profession of audiology, all SL projects might not be amenable to smooth transition into eSL projects (e.g., projects providing conventional hearing screenings to community members); however, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is speculated that new ideas and initiatives in the educational (e.g., Whitelaw, 2020) and clinical domains (e.g., Mosley et al, 2019;Swanepoel & Hall, 2020) might provide an impetus for eSL projects.…”
