Reliability of pelvic floor muscle strength assessment in healthy continent women

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to compare pelvic floor muscle (PFM) strength using transvaginal digital palpation in healthy continent women in different age groups, and to compare the inter- and intra-rater reliability of examiners performing anterior and posterior vaginal assessments.MethodsWe prospectively studied 150 healthy multiparous women. They were distributed into four different groups, according to age range: G1 (n = 37), 30–40 years-old; G2 (n = 39), 41–50 years-old; G3 (n = 39), 51–60 years-o… Show more

“…However, for G2 and G3, bidigital palpation showed higher intra‐rater reliability. Although similar results have been published in the literature, methodological differences related to sample size, methodological designs, and statistical methods among the studies did not enable direct comparison of their results.…”

“…This may be one reason for the variable reliability found in previous reproducible studies. However, vaginal palpation may be a difficult method to use to quantify PFM function due to anatomical variability and experience‐evaluator dependence . In particular, it is not yet known whether the introduction of one or two fingers into the vaginal canal may influence the measurement of the MVC of the PFM.…”

“…were also unable to find associations between PFM strength, age and number of vaginal deliveries, upon studying 150 continent women ranging from 30 to 67 years of age. However, they did not have a group with PFD for comparison nor did they include women of all ages .…”

“…At around the age of 40 years, there is a decline in hormone levels, primarily estrogens, which tends to decrease in tropism and strength in these muscles. The reduced ability to generate PFM strength will hinder urethral closure and the emergence and/or aggravation of LUTS5,6,7 ) .…”
