Reliability of Estrous Detection in Holstein Heifers Using a Radiotelemetric Pedometer Located on the Neck or Legs Under Different Rearing Conditions

Abstract: Abstract. To evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of estrous detection using a new pedometry system that can measure the hourly activity of cattle, pedometers were attached to the neck and the hind legs of 15 Holstein heifers. Heifers were reared in pasture for grazing, an open paddock, or in a tie-stall barn (an additional pedometer was attached to a front leg of each of these heifers). The most recent 24 h-total number of steps was compared for each 1 h-interval with the mean value of the preceding days duri… Show more

“…The efficiency of estrous detection = (PDE / TOE) 100 (%). The accuracy of estrous detection = (PDE / TPA) 100 (%) [110]. production may be a cause of declining fertility through direct or indirect pathways, it is important to determine the critical level of negative status as a threshold for declining fertility.…”

“…[110]. The efficiency and accuracy of this system were evaluated using the estrous detection ratio and the true positive ratio, respectively, and the efficiency and accuracy of the data from the pedometers that had been attached to different locations on the same heifers were compared under different rearing conditions.…”

“…Utilizing this system, the efficiency with which estrus could be detected in Holstein heifers grazing and in the paddock was investigated [9]. However, there has been no report concerning verification of predictions of ovulation time using pedometry in Japanese Black cows under general rearing conditions.…”

“…Measurement of the increase in an animal's activity around estrus using radiotelemetric pedometers will be one of the most reliable methods of detecting estrus 36,39 . The application of hormonal treatment programs, such as estrus or ovulation synchronization, is expected to be an effective means of overcoming the fertility problems of modern dairy herds.…”
