Reliability Importance of Renewable Energy Sources to Overall Generating Systems

Abstract: Over the years, probabilistic nature of renewable energy sources (RES) and its influence on power system adequacy have been well studied. However, rather less attention has been paid to the impact of RES unit itself's and its power conversion system's (PCS') reliability, as well as their various connection topologies. This paper devises a comprehensive sensitivity study on how each of these elements can affect overall generating system reliability. given the plethora of RES configurations and components, it is… Show more

“…The nature of wind and solar being evenly distributed and modular make them to be less prone to large-scale failures . While non-renewable energy power plants such as coal, nuclear and natural gas plants can be at risk due to severe droughts and heat waves as they need sufficient water for cooling, wind turbine generators are assumed to be 100% reliable (Niu et al, 2021). This means future impacts of climate change such as increased droughts, heat waves, intense storms and severe wildfire will not pose high risks to renewable energy sources and energy production .…”

“…The globe has been compelled to take advantage of these free energy sources (photovoltaic, wind, and hydro) in order to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for electricity. However, the frequency drops and power system operation is impacted by the incorporation of renewables [1].…”

“…The globe has been compelled to take advantage of these free energy sources (photovoltaic, wind, and hydro) in order to keep up with the ever‐increasing demand for electricity. However, the frequency drops and power system operation is impacted by the incorporation of renewables [1]. With the variety of loads and the increased use of RES to mitigate the drawbacks of traditional power units, contemporary power networks have recently grown increasingly complicated.…”

“…Today, the use of energy obtained from photovoltaic systems is increasing rapidly day by day. Solar energy is the most popular among energy sources due to its main advantages such as no fuel problem and no pollution [1][2][3].…”
