Reliability evaluation and comparison for next-generation substation function based on IEC 61850 using Monte Carlo simulation

Abstract: The traditional way to evaluate the system reliability or a probability of failure in the system is to use one of two basic approaches, direct analytical techniques or stochastic simulation. The emerging concept of Smart Grid requires advanced automation solutions for distributed electricity production and distribution. The automation system must fill the performance, availability and reliability requirements, including a probability of failure level under the specified limits. IEC61850 is a recent standard fo… Show more

“…The papers [1], [2], [29] discuss the reliability, availability and data traffic flow performance of IEC-61850 based SCN. The reliability and availability performance is evaluated using the RBD while Optimised Network Engineering Tools (OPNET) software is used in [27], [30], [39]- [43], [31]- [38]. In the studies presented in [27], [30], [39]- [43], [31]- [38], system diagnostic coverage is not considered in the evaluation of the system reliability performance [2], [6].…”

“…Monte Carlo simulation, RBD, Boolean truth table and field data estimation methods are applied to the 5 different UPS configurations. In [6], the analytical and simulation approaches of reliability evaluation for substations and for different substation topologies are investigated. The paper concludes that the Monte Carlo method is a flexible alternative of analytical methods.…”

“…A detailed review of reliability evaluation methods for IEC-61850 based SCN is presented in [6]- [9], which highlight this aspect. More reliability and availability comparison studies are presented in [10], [11]. As a result, the methods exaggerated system performance is obtained through their use; which sees the system appears to underperform during its useful life [1], [9], [12], [13].…”
