Reliability design of preventive maintenance scheduling for cumulative fatigue damage

Abstract: As the cumulative running times of a locomotive truck increases, degradation such as fatigue, wear, and deterioration occur. Particularly the container train and uncovered freight train, their maintenance cost during their lifetime is three times more than the manufacturing cost. Generally, for the freight train, corrective maintenance to repair a bad part after a breakdown is not adapted; however, preventive maintenance that fixes a bad part before a breakdown is. Therefore, it is important and necessary to e… Show more

“…1,2 At present, maintenance strategy mainly can be divided into two types 3 : preventive maintenance strategy and corrective maintenance strategy. Corrective maintenance is to repair the equipment after failure [4][5][6] ; preventive maintenance generally refers to taking corresponding maintenance actions to delay the occurrence of the failure before the equipment fails. [6][7][8] Preventive maintenance can be further divided into two categories according to the basis of formulating maintenance strategies, namely condition-based preventive maintenance and time-based preventive maintenance.…”

“…Maintenance is usually scheduled to prevent failure of a structure, and the maintenance interval is determined based on reliability (Torres-Echeverria and Thompson, 1 and Baek et al 2 ) or cost (Abjallah and Adzakpa 3 ). There is ongoing research on alternative condition-based maintenance (CBM) that continuously tracks a deteriorating system and requests maintenance when the deterioration level crosses a pre-determined threshold.…”
