Reliability and validity study of the Thai adaptation of the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (CBI-SS) among preclinical medical students at the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand

Abstract: Burnout syndrome is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, professional efficacy and cynicism. A significant proportion of medical students reported having burnout syndrome during their training in medical education. Several tools including the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (CBI-SS) are considered to be a valid measurement of burnout syndrome in medical students. This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the CBI-SS for assessing burnout syndrome among preclinical medical students… Show more

“…Similar to the ndings of Campos et al and Wongkuratul et al, the factor loading for Item 10 was lower than the recommended threshold [14,15]. This phenomenon has also been observed in studies on the general CBI among Chinese workers [36].…”

“…The Cronbach's alpha coe cients of the CBI-SS were notably robust, ranging from 0.862 to 0.914 for all four subscales, with an overall value of 0.954 for the total scale. These reliability measures closely align with reported scores from the original Portuguese version of the CBI-SS (ranging from 0.875 to 0.931 for subscales and 0.957 for the total scale), as well as the Thai version (0.896 to 0.910 for all four subscales and 0.929 for the total scale) [10,15]. Moreover, both the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) and the Heterotrait-Monotrait (HTMT) ratios substantiate satisfactory levels of convergent and discriminant validity, respectively.…”

“…Work engagement will be measured by using the 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) [35] [for Vietnamese [36] and Thai [37]]. Burnout will be measured by the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) [38] [for Thai [39]]. The CBI will be translated into Vietnamese and the back-translation will be checked by the original author, with a standardized procedure [40].…”

“…Kristensen et al (2005) [14] recommended translating the CBI into different languages and testing it in different cultures. Subsequently, the CBI has been translated and used in research studies in the following languages: Arabic [22], Chinese [23], Danish [14], English [21], Greek [20], Italian [24], Japanese [25], Korean [26], Malay [27], Persian [28], Portuguese [29], Serbian [30], Slovenian [31], Spanish [32], Thai [33], and many others. Most have been published quite recently, probably due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.…”
