Reliability and Validity of the Spanish Version of the Substance Dependence Severity Scale

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate the reliability and provide evidence for the validity of the Spanish version of the Substance Dependence Severity Scale (SDSS). Methods: A total of 211 substance abusers recruited at a public center that provides treatment for substance-related disorders in an outpatient setting were assessed. Reliability was estimated by Cronbach's α and test-retest. Validity evidence was studied by analyzing the relationships with the European Addiction Severity Index (Europ… Show more

“…The composite scores of each dimension ranged from 0 to 1, while higher scores indicated greater severity. The reliability measures indicated moderate to good internal consistency in the European samples (Cronbach's alpha: 0.69-0.92) [50,51].…”

“…The Spanish version of the Substance Dependence Severity Scale (SDSS; Miele et al, 2000) was used (Vélez-Moreno et al, 2013; Vélez-Moreno et al, 2015). This measure assesses the severity of DSM-IV substance dependence during the 30 days prior to the interview.…”

“…Its test-retest reliability for alcohol is excellent: ICC 0.90 [0.79-0.88] for severity and ICC 0.82 [0.77-0.86]. The reliability and concurrent validity of the Spanish version have also been studied and behave very similarly to the original scale [35]. The RAs will be trained on the procedures to apply this instrument according to what has been reported by the authors.…”
