Reliability and Validity of the Self-Perception Profile for Children with Mexican American Elementary-Age Children

Abstract: The internal consistency and concurrent validity of the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) were investigated for 107 elementary-age Mexican American children. The results indicated a high degree of similarity between the responses of this population and those of the original norm group. The internal consistency coefficients for the entire instrument (.89) as well as the individual subscales (.62 to .74) were sufficiently strong to support the use of this instrument. To establish the concurrent validit… Show more

“…Higher scores indicate greater self-esteem. Internal validity of the scale has ranged from 0.62 to 0.84 in prior studies (Eapen, Naqvi, & Al-Dhaheri, 2000; Harter, 1985; Hess & Petersen, 1996). …”

“…Items were averaged to create a global self-worth score. The GSW was used in studies of Mexican–American adolescents, demonstrating good internal reliability and construct validity (Hess and Petersen 1996; Michaels et al 2007; Schmitz 2006). For our sample, the scale showed good internal reliabilities (α = .72 and α = .83 in 5th and 7th grade respectively).…”

“…The School Maladjustment Composite, which contains the Attitude to School and Attitude to Teachers scales, was selected for the present study because students' attitudes toward school and teachers have been shown to be significantly related to school adjustment (Ishikawa & Ryousuke, 2003;Lopez, Olaizola, Ferrer, & Ochoa, 2006), academic achievement (Gable, Roberts, & Owen, 1977;Hess & Peterson, 1996) and achievement motivation . The Attitude to School scale measures students' feelings of alienation, hostility, and dissatisfaction regarding school.…”
