Reliability and Validity of the Spanish-Language Version of the NIH Toolbox

Abstract: The psychometric properties of the English-language NIH Toolbox for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function (NIH Toolbox) have been examined in numerous populations. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Spanish-language NIH Toolbox. “…We used the standardized scale scores from each of the four subscales; intercorrelations ranged from r = .26 to .56. Internal consistency has been previously reported in both the English and Spanish versions of the parent-report for children aged 3-7, with alphas ranging from .77 (sadness) to .85 (anger) in the English version (Salsman et al, 2013) and .66 (fearoveranxious) to .71 (fear-separation anxiety; Fox et al, 2021).…”

“…These measures were evaluated for cultural appropriateness with Hispanics/Latinos living in the United States whose primary language was Spanish [ 68 ]. The assessment of the Spanish-language version of the NIH Toolbox showed good psychometric properties and supports its use to measure cognitive and behavioral functioning among Spanish-speaking individuals in the United States [ 69 ]. We investigated the construct validity of these measures in our study population using CFA.…”

“…The experts must have a PhD degree in English Applied Linguistics with professional development; they must be English language professors with at least ten years of teaching English experience; they must have research publications in International Scientific Indexing (ISI)/SCOPUS journals to demonstrate expertise in their subject matters, and they must have the practical experience to implement innovative teaching methodologies in learning English. To validate the research instruments, the researchers requested a panel of three senior English language Professors who earned their PhD degrees in English Applied Linguistics from prestigious universities with rigorous teaching experience of at least ten years to review the selected items of the questionnaires associated with the main constructs (Abu-Bader, 2021;Bryman, 2016;Fox et al, 2020). After a thorough review of the items of the questionnaires, the experts argued that the items of the questionnaires are easy, understandable, properly worded, and stated briefly, representing the main variables.…”
