Reliability and validity of the brief dimensional apathy scale

Abstract: Objective Apathy is composed of different demotivational subtypes measurable by the dimensional apathy scale (DAS) and can be quickly assessed using the brief DAS (b-DAS). The aim was to determine the reliability and validity of the b-DAS. Methods 53 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and 53 of their informants were recruited. Informants completed the b-DAS, the original informant/carer-rated DAS and behavioral inte… Show more

“…Emerging functional modalities, such as magnetoencephalography or spectral EEG have also confirmed widespread extra-motor dysfunction and as these technologies develop they are likely to contribute important additional insights (239)(240)(241)(242)(243). The majority of imaging studies in ALS explored the underpinnings of the most commonly affected neuropsychological domains (233,244), such as the substrate of verbal fluency deficits, executive dysfunction, and behavioral impairment, but with the recognition of the relatively high prevalence of impairments in social cognition, memory deficits, and of apathy, the focus of imaging studies is likely to gradually shift (12,(245)(246)(247)(248)(249). Imaging changes in ALS are typically solely interpreted based on genetic and clinical profiles, and seldom correlated with other markers such biofluid markers (250)(251)(252).…”

“…Variable awareness of, or insight into, behavior problems and/or changes is characteristic of frontotemporal dementia associated with ALS ( 33 ), which may influence patients' self-ratings. As a result, the informant/caregiver-rated DAS was used to design the informant/caregiver-rated brief DAS ( 34 , 35 ), a short and comprehensive apathy subtype measure with a supplemental awareness assessment. Future research should look to translate and utilize the brief DAS clinically to help detect motivational problems.…”

“…The convenience recruitment method utilized may also have biased the sample and, as with other apathy research, may have introduced a volunteerism bias. However, this is unlikely to impact the Spanish DAS validation results as previous DAS validation research has used similar recruitment methodology ( 16 , 21 , 35 ). Furthermore, there was an age difference between the ALS patient group and the control group.…”

“…Besides generic instruments available to evaluate multiple neuropsychiatric syndromes in AD, with the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) being the most frequently used in research and clinical settings [ 40 ], there are tools specifically developed to assess apathy. The latter group includes the Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) [ 19 , 41 ], the Apathy Inventory [ 42 ], the Lille Apathy Rating Scale [ 43 , 44 ], and the Dimensional Apathy Scale [ 45 , 46 ], among others [ 39 , 47 ].…”
